Where to go in Santorini?

Ancient AkrotiriBy Nadia Prigoda from Toronto, Canada (Flickr), CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons
Ancient Akrotiri is an archaeological dig site where are unearthed the ruins of civilization from thousands of years BC. The ancient city is a historical and archaeological treasure found during excavation works in 1967. Then there was found a real city of Minoan, which disappeared deep beneath the ground after an enormous volcano eruption in 1613 BC.  The city, its streets and houses have been reconstructed and now it is possible to walk along the ancient streets, and have a look at well-preserved three-stored buildings and roads, drainage system and almost 4 000 years old pottery. With all the earthquakes torturing the island some of the former cities are still under the water and there is still a lot to discover.

The treasures found in the ancient and beautiful Akrotiri are kept there – in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. There are displayed impressively old and magnificent artworks and artefacts like: marble figurines, paintings, tools and weapons of those times, fresco, sculpture, jewellery and painted ceramics. Museum of Prehistoric Thera is located in Fira, the capital of Santorini. Some of the most famous exhibits in the museum were found in 1900 – they are supposed to be the remains and household items of a legendary Spartan colony.
